`Tis the Bike Porn Season
Winter is the season for bike porn. When the days are short or cold or wet, it’s so much easier to stay inside, drink an adult beverage, and surf the web for hot bikes.
Besides the weather, you also know it’s bike porn season because NAHBS is right around the corner. They’re gearing up and posting bikes.
I’m planning on being there this year, dog willing.
Yeah, I meant “dog” and not “God”. You see, I was planning on attending another event earlier this year — Gran La Fonda — but my dog decided that would be a good day to try and OD on a bottle of childrens’ advil. Needless to say there are no hot bikes at the vet.
So I’ll make the preparations to be at NAHBS. I’ll book the flight, order stickers and a few t-shirts, and hide the advil. And if all goes well, I’ll see you there.
In the mean time, send in your pics. It would be sweet to have 100 bikes before the show. (I’m also thinking about switching the drawing for the headset from the first hundred bike to the bike submitted before the show if I don’t get 100.)
Happy Bike Porn Season to you and your family from Porno Velo.
Want.
Tweeted it before but it’s worth saying again: this is one cool-ass logo. The bags look equally cool-ass.

I was thinking about where my bike “problem” started. It was seeing these bikes on the trails in Santa Barbara in the late eighties / early nineties. The Desert Turquoise paint, the ovalized top tube and unique cable routing, the crazy rear triangle. There’s nothing like your first (unrequited, unfortunately) love.
Getting into the (bike) porn industry
Porno Velo early in the morning on Feb 21, 2010. Normally I’d get my bike porn fix on the Fixed Gear Gallery. But I just wasn’t feeling fixed gears that morning. I was thinking about cross bikes — single speed cross bikes to be exact. I looked around at the DeSalvo and Vanilla sites. I checked out Tonic too. But what I wanted was something like the fixed gear gallery, but full of other kinds of bikes.
Wouldn’t it be great if there were such a site?
Hey, wait a second. I build websites. What if I shamelessly build the damn thing myself?
Within a few hours I had a domain name and website: PornoVelo.com was born.
Tomorrow PV will have been live for a month. We’ve got 16 bikes live, and more in the que. I’ve got a lot of plans for the site and it’s coming along slowly. But for now, at least I know there’s a site I can look forward to gawking at on weekend mornings.
